Local Listings + Citations = Social Equity

Increasing local presence on search engines, local listings and citation sites is a must for all businesses, especially local businesses.

Gaining a local presence on search engines is simple and straightforward; just claim a location on Google, Yahoo! and Yelp, then add your business to sites like yellowpages.com or angieslist.com. In most cases, these websites will allow you to add important company information to your profile as well as pictures, videos and website links.  They will simply confirm your location (often sending a postcard or calling your business with a pin #), and then you’ll be set!

Following these steps will help get you on the first page of Google or other search engines for the keywords you covet, inlcuding location-based keywords and searches. Completing your profiles on these sites with accurate URLs will not only help you be present in many places (for both online and mobile searches), but it will also help your site to rank higher on search engines.

In the wake of Google’s Panda and Penguin updates, we can see that Google is increasingly looking to see who’s “popular” when ranking sites. SEO is becoming less about a site’s look and build (although it’s still necessary) and more about social equity. It’s imperative for businesses to engage with the rest of the internet by creating quality content, encouraging other sites pointing to theirs (building links) and interacting with their audiences on Facebook, Twitter and the like.

Do it now, before your site begins to plummet down the ranks. Do it now, before your competition does it first. Just…well…do it!
